DIY Gold & Marble VITTSJO Shelf IKEA Hack

Sharing is caring!

Hey everyone! As I think everyone knows, I’ve been on Weight Watchers for 14 weeks/100 DAYS. Insane. I’ve lost 25 pounds, and I have a lot more energy now. I used to just want to sit around binge watching Netflix, and now I feel kind of restless if I do that.

I put all my energy to use this weekend by working on the office some more. The initial reveal was posted almost a year ago, I finished the closet doors about two weeks ago, and this past weekend I painted the wall Tricorn Black by Sherwin-Williams because I had some paint leftover from our master bedroom accent wall DIY. Here’s a sneak peek- I’ll have more photos next week.

A black, white and gold home office featuring a fab IKEA VITTSJO hack, tricorn black walls, a sunburst mirror, white desk and other glam home decor accents.

I liked my office, but something always kind of bugged me. I felt cluttered due to the lack of a function closet. I wanted it to be more sophisticated and upscale so I’m working towards that now. When I first turned this spare bedroom into my office I repurposed various furniture pieces (the desk and the console table) to keep it cheap, and I’m a bit past that and wanted nicer, more grown-up stuff. We also installed a closet system this past weekend, and you’ll get to see that reveal here on June 1.

Back in January I ordered some of this fabulous contact paper to cover the espresso shelves on my IKEA VITTSJO shelving units. I spray painted the units using gold spray paint when I bought them in March of last year, and had intentions of covering the top/bottom wooden shelves with something. I initially ordered another (cheaper) brand of marble contact paper and hated the way it looked because of all the beige veining, so I spent an extra $4 on the good marble contact paper and love it.

Here’s a rundown of the process:

Supplies:

Step 1: Dust off your shelves to ensure there’s no dust/dirt on the shelf.

Step 2: Roll out your marble contact paper, flip over and measure the size you need. Make a mark on the x and y axis of where you need to cut.  (Note: this roll of contact paper is much smaller than your average roll- one roll will cover four of the VITTSJO shelves, but only if you measure accurately. I left about 1/4″ overhang on the sides and just barely had enough.)

Step 3: Cut the contact paper and remove the adhesive back from the paper. Lay the contact paper adhesive side up and lay the shelf onto it.

Step 4: Fold up the bottom edge and flip over. Smooth out any air bubbles to the nearest edge to allow the air to escape. Once it’s smooth, fold down the top edge and the sides. For the sides, I took the gift wrap approach to ensure nice corners. With this application, you won’t see the sides, so don’t fret too much.

Step 5: Using a gift card or credit card, run the card along all the edges to get a crisp, even fold. You may have to do this a few times, but don’t be too rough with it or you’ll risk tearing the paper.

Step 6: Put the shelves back, style and enjoy!

This contact paper is really high quality and VERY glossy compared to “regular” contact paper. If you want something to look like legit marble, this should be your go-to paper. I’m going to buy another two rolls to create some “marble” shelves for the guest/hall bathroom.

Hope this tutorial inspires you to breathe new life into an old shelf or item. What do you think of the new look and placement of my VITTSJO shelves?

Gorgeous! I have one vittsjo unit that I thought I was going to use in Claire's room but it didn't work. It's now in our closet and could use some sprucing up! Pinning this for later.
