I find that the number one décor dilemma people have is styling different parts of their home such as coffee tables, end tables, bar carts, bookshelves, console tables, etc. I think it can be challenging because you pressure yourself for it to be perfect, but I am sharing five easy tips to create a simply glam vignette. Today, I’ll focus on coffee table styling, and I’ll also be writing about console tables and bar carts soon. I already wrote about styling end tables.
Coffee tables usually have to serve a few different functions—place to set down your drink, prop up your feet, hold some magazines, be used for game night, or hold appetizers during the big game in addition to being beautiful and decorative.
1.) Use a Tray
This is why the first aspect of styling a coffee table involves using a tray to corral the items. In a few seconds, you can have the table cleared off and ready for game night or appetizers. I like to choose large trays that can hold nearly everything, have handles and add a bit of drama to the décor (like this malachite tray does).
2.) Something with Height & Something Stacked
The next must have for a beautiful coffee table is something with height paired with something stacked. Some items that add height could be candlesticks, vases, decorative busts/animal silhouettes— chances are you have something perfect in your décor stash. If you don’t have anything quite tall enough, this is where something stacked can help.
Books and magazines are great ways to add some interest and color, plus they also serve as great conversation starters when you have guests over. Don’t have books/magazines laying around? A decorative box will work, plus it can be used as a place to store the remotes.
3.) Add a Plant or Florals
I wish I could keep real plants alive— I have such a black thumb! This is why I invest in beautiful faux florals that I can mix and match with different vases or vessels to create constantly changing floral arrangements. Flowers and plants really make any vignette instantly classy. If you want a low maintenance, long lasting option consider some beautiful succulents (or go for faux, like I do!)
4.) Layer in Smaller Objects
Layering in smaller objects helps ties everything together. Some of my go-to small, yet useful, décor items are scented votives in seasonal scents in mercury glass candle holders (go for unscented if serving food), smaller trays or catch-alls for jewelry/keys, abstract geometric objects, and smaller framed photos that look out of scale/too small on bookshelves.
5.) Keep it Clean and Dust Free
None of this décor looks good if it’s on a dirty or fingerprint ridden surface, which is especially prone to happen on glass coffee tables like mine! Being that we use our coffee table daily, and the fact that sometimes feet or dog hair end up on it, I keep it clean with the new Scentiva line from Clorox. It doesn’t have the usual chemical smell, BUT does have the cleaning power of Clorox. The two scents are Tuscan Lavender and Jasmine & Hawaiian Sunset.
The products are available in wipes and spray bottle format. The wipes are so easy to use in a pinch for daily cleaning/dusting, and the spray is great to use when switching out décor and cleaning the whole table so it sparkles! You can save some $$$ on the new Scentiva products by adding the offer to your Cartwheel next time you shop at Target (and let’s face it…none of us need an excuse to go to Target, am I right?)
I also love using these products in my kitchen to clean after cooking because I know it kills 99.9% of bacteria (and other not so fun stuff), and the bonus is that my space is left smelling bright and fresh and CLEAN.
I hope my 5 easy tips help get you inspired to change up your coffee table décor. I switch mine up about once a month, and with this formula it’s easy to make a few décor swaps and have a whole new look.
And now I feel like I want to go clean something and head to Target. 🙂
